The basics of posing
Posing can be a bit overwhelming but really it’s quite easy bit a bit of practice. It’s a bit like acting in slow motion, with each click from the camera you move a little more then freeze again.
First, we’ll discuss the importance of posture and body language. Modelling poses should look natural, not forced or contrived. When posing, you should keep your body language relaxed and open, with arms and legs slightly bent. You should stand tall and keep your head up, with a confident expression. A variety of looks will be asked from the photographer from stern to relaxed and smiling.
For a portrait session, models should try to capture their unique personality and character with their poses.
For fashion sessions, models should practice how to pose differently for each type of clothing in the brand range.
For commercial lifestyle sessions, models should be able to portray different lifestyles and emotions.
It can never be underestimated the importance of practice when it comes to posing for a modelling session. Models should practice in front of a mirror, taking time to observe and adjust their poses until they are comfortable and confident. During sessions I shoot tethered on a tv screen. This give you instant feedback so you can also take note of any feedback live from the photographer and use it to further refine your pose.
These tips can help aspiring models learn how to prepare for a modelling session and create the perfect poses to capture their unique look. With practice and dedication, you can become a successful and confident model.
